She loves working for and with our youth and has volunteered her time teaching finance in the classroom for Junior Achievement, organizing youth education/activities at Camano Lutheran Church, being a member of the Curriculum Committee for the SCSD, coaching volleyball, helping with Boy Scouts, and being the SHS Band Booster Treasurer. Jennifer joined the Board in 2022 and took on the role of President in 2026.

Jennifer's Why: "I joined the SCAF Board because I wanted to give back to the community that our family has been a part of for over 20 years. SCAF's mission is so important to improving our community and I want to be part of it!"

One of her favorite expressions is, “I never met a person I couldn’t learn something from!”

Elaina's Why: "I serve on the SCAF board because I strongly believe 'you can't be a change agent from the sidelines,' if you want to impact your community and give back in a meaningful way, you have to roll up your sleeves and get involved!"

Laura Byers

Treasurer

Laura is a long time Camano Island resident and community volunteer who recently retired from her career in a leadership role with Coastal Community Bank. She has been on the board for 20 years, and during that time she has seen SCAF grow from a high school scholarship program to a robust, collaborative, and engaged foundation serving the full breadth of the community. She and her husband enjoy all the amenities our community has to offer, and the amazing people who live here.

Laura's Why: "We have so many incredible organizations that support specific causes and people in our area, and SCAF supports all of them through collaboration, coaching, and funding. I know that my participation as a board member has a wide ranging and long lasting impact on our community."

Ian Gleadle

Secretary

Ian Gleadle is a professional photographer residing part and fulltime on Camano Island since 1991. He graduated from the University of Washington in 1985 with a BS in Mathematics and Computer Science. Ian and his wife Linda have two college graduate children, one grandchild, and a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel named Sophie. When he is not busy volunteering in the community he spends time gardening, and is an Island County Master Gardener. He strongly believes that all students should have an opportunity to go to college and discover who they are and what they can become!

Ian's Why: "Serving on the SCAF Board of Trustees provides an opportunity to make a significant impact in the community, collaborate with dedicated individuals, and support initiatives that improve local education, advance impactful projects, and enhance overall well-being in Stanwood and Camano Island. It's a rewarding chance to be directly involved in shaping and advancing the Foundation's mission and contributing to a better future for all."

Bonnie Cavell

Board Member

Bonnie moved to Camano Island in 1996 to retire. After five years of college and graduating with a BS and nursing degree, her first position was in Pasco WA. That introduction to the western United States spawned not only an appreciation for the mountains and ocean and the outdoor activities they fostered, but also a strong sense of community commitment. Throughout her professional life, Bonnie's priorities were public teaching, supporting children's programs, mentoring rural hospitals and young professionals, and creating emergency/disaster plans. Living in seven states, she also had an opportunity to be a small business and apartment owner, sell real estate, and broker mortgages, always returning to her passion in an emergency department or critical care area. Married to her husband Richard for 30 years, traveling the world with him and returned home to a standard poodle on Camano Island has been a most educational and satisfying journey, for which she is very grateful.

Bonnie's Why: "I was impressed and aware of SCAF within six months of moving to Camano. We value education at all age levels and interests and recognize the relevance of a community that leaves no need or age group overlooked. SCAF compliments our desire to contribute to these ideals and in doing so, it is humbling and a privilege to be a small part of an organization I have long admired."

Dave Hayes

Board Member

Dave Hayes has lived on Camano Island for 30 years with his wife, Lisa. They have two grown sons, Jeff and Chris as well as six grandchildren. Dave served three terms in the State House of Representatives representing the 10th Legislative District and is a career law enforcement officer, currently serving as an Commander with the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office. He is a past president of the Washington Council of Police and Sheriffs, serving law enforcement officers statewide, and has taught in the Criminal Justice Department of Everett Community College. Before entering law enforcement, Dave served in the U.S. Navy as an enlisted Aircraft Mechanic and worked several years in the aerospace industry.

Dave's Why: "Upon moving into the Stanwood-Camano community, I read about SCAF in the Stanwood-Camano News. I was impressed with the mission of providing scholarships to local students and improving people's prospect of a quality post-high school education. SCAF has since developed into so much more, supporting our community, broadly supporting the non-profit community, and improving people's livelihoods through pre-K education and mental health grants. Over the years our mission has expanded through the generous contributions of people throughout the Stanwood-Camano area. I'm proud of our efforts and the support of our contributors to support our neighbors. SCAF is Stanwood-Camano."

The Schlagel family also loves to spend time on the water crabbing and water skiing, and have attended Camano Lutheran Church for almost 30 years. He joined the board in 2020, when, after talking with a couple friends on the SCAF Board, he realized it would be a great fit.

Don's Why: "I have been an Allstate Insurance business owner since 1988, and have appreciated how much the community has supported my business and family. I have a passion for helping the less fortunate, seniors in need, the local food bank, and mentoring our youth. SCAF is a great way to give back, while also supporting all of these causes."

Alex Thoreen

Board Member

Alex is a third-generation Camano Island resident. Alex is a stay-at-home dad and a former intellectual property attorney who specialized in securing patents for technology companies. Alex's Why: "My grandfather founded SCAF in 1960. The family lore is that SCAF was created to build a public swimming pool in Stanwood. Although that goal was never achieved, my grandfather would be immensely proud of the organization that SCAF has become. Nearly every nonprofit in our community has been assisted by SCAF in some way. I enjoy being on the SCAF board to help the organizations which preserve the history of the Stanwood-Camano area, as well as the organizations which are working hard to make the Stanwood-Camano area a better place to live for families."
